ABOUT LOW TESTOSTERONE
Low testosterone levels are associated with low energy or low sexual drive. It may also cause irritability, changes in mood, and sometimes even changes in physical appearance. It is possible that this condition may be relieved by medication that may help restore the physical function.
Like all steroid hormones, cholesterol is synthesized into testosterone in the Leydig cells in the body and is categorized as an androgen, meaning that it stimulates the development and preservation of male characteristics.
Regulation of testosterone production is controlled by the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland in order to maintain normal levels which range from 300 – 1000ng/dl.
FUNCTIONS OF THE TESTOSTERONE HORMONE INCLUDE:
LIBIDO – a man’s desire for sex
METABOLISM – helps to regulate metabolic functions and maintain low body fat
MAINTENANCE OF SEX CHARACTERISTICS – muscle mass, deep voice, facial hair, etc
MOOD REGULATION – responsible for neuron growth, cognitive ability and mood
Medication may help in supplementing low levels of testosterone as it is a congenital condition (and even sometimes, acquired) without a known method to naturally increase levels in the body. Common types of Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) involve the use of patches, gels or injections and use of such treatments should be monitored by a doctor, due to the risk of testosterone toxicity.
